Living in Los Cabos: Radio Alert!
If you’re a foreigner living in Los Cabos, or even just thinking of it, you’ll want to book out an hour tomorrow, July 14, from 5:30-6:30 MDT to listen to Los Cabos Now on Cabo Mil. I’m going to co-host with Sabrina Lear and our very special guest is Martin Segovia, the head of Immigration for the area. This is very important because in May all the rules and procedures changed and very little information on the new rules has been available to the English-speaking community.
One of the few changes we know of is that the familiar little books for permanent residents are going to be replaced by a single plastic card that looks like a credit card or driver’s license. I also just learned today that much of your application must now be downloaded online at www.inm.gob.mx. They have part of the site in English, and it has links to download the forms you will need to fill out as Adobe Acrobat files. Now mind you, I didn’t spend the whole afternoon at it, but it seems like their explanation of the new procedures is just as clear as the old explanations: as in NOT. However, it is an improvement and things are looking better and more efficient.
The main problem I had in my brief visit is that the manual explaining who needs what form and why is in Spanish, which means the large ‘we help you with Immigration’ industry in Cabo is in no danger of obsolescence. Even if you pay someone to help you you’ll still want to know what it is they are helping you with, so plan on tuning into the show tomorrow night.
